I’m Thinking of Ending Things: Movie adaptation vs. Book
This month has gone by so quickly!
Because it’s October and because today is Halloween, I decided to bring to you some spooky bookish content!
Today, Abi Christina will be talking about the movie “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” and how the adaptation is similar/different from the book!
btw, it’s spoiler-free 🙂
So… let’s begin!
The movie adaptation of I’m Thinking of Ending Things seemed like it was released just in time for spooky season. This story is about Jake and his girlfriend who decided to meet Jake’s parents after a few weeks of dating. Jake’s girlfriend is thinking about ending things but still decides to take the journey. When they arrive in the town Jake’s parents live, very strange things start happening. I’m Thinking of Ending Things was initially a book by Iain Reid and both the book and the movie adaptation succeed in giving off creepy vibes. However, there are differences in the delivery.
Jake’s girlfriend and her thoughts
Jake’s girlfriend isn’t given an official name in both the book and movie. She’s completely unnamed in the book and in the movie, she’s given several different names such as Amy, Louisa and Lucy. I think the book delivers this better as it gives a more mysterious trait to Jake’s girlfriend. Throughout most of the book, Jake’s girlfriend encounters The Caller, who constantly sends her mysterious messages from her own number. We are left to question who is actually calling her as the story carries on. In contrast, the movie uses different caller IDs to show that Jake’s girlfriend is given different names. I think this just makes the movie more confusing and difficult to catch onto.
We also see more of what Jake’s girlfriend is thinking in the book. I think this aspect generally makes books better than their movie adaptation because we get to look into the mind of the main character. We see Jake’s girlfriend’s inner turmoil, debating in her head whether she should end things with Jake or not. Most of the movie is just dialogue between the characters, only sometimes do we hear what’s going on in Jake’s girlfriend’s head.
The strange occurrences
A dozen of strange things happen when they arrive at Jake’s parent’s house. In the book, these strange things start piling up and there’s way more depth to Jake’s character. Jake says a lot in the book and tells his girlfriend more stories about his life and family. But we see that he also keeps secrets from her which she finds out through his parents. In the movie, Jake seems like he’s always uncomfortable speaking and being with his parents. Yes, he does have strange moments but they’re not as intense like in the book.
The book ending and the movie ending are completely different. I won’t spoil it, but if you read the book, you’d probably be disappointed in how the movie ends. Both endings do explain “the why” of the whole story. But I think the book does it better, especially because it’s not vague like the movie. I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a story where you’re just left thinking about how odd everything is. Some people either love it or hate it. But others, like me, I have no idea what to make of it.
Have you watched “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”? If so, did you like it? If not, are you interested ins watching or reading the book?
For someone like me (who doesn’t like horror books) would you recommend that I read the book?
